On the outskirts of Salem, behind a large Walgreen’s store in a quiet residential neighborhood is a roadside memorial to the 19 unfortunate souls who were hung as ‘witches’ during the hysteria that occurred during the Salem Witch Hunts of 1692.
The modest memorial is on the site where the town gallows are thought to have been located ( Gallows Hill) and serves as a place of remembrance for those unfortunates who were executed during this tragic era of Salem’s history. A small stone wall with bricks with the names of the people who were executed features at the memorial.
I found it a calm and peaceful place for reflection on the waste of lives that occurred during this tragic period in the history of Salem.
